Abstract

Lack of understanding of the mathematical concepts that students can be caused by several things, including lack of availability of teaching materials that are easy to understand students, thus growing lack of interest in learning. Students only memorize formulas without understanding the concept. Students are afraid to ask questions and issuing an opinion on the matter did not understand, students can not work on the problems that are different from the sample questions. The purpose of this study was to determine students' understanding of mathematical concepts using active learning strategies giving the type of question and getting answers accompanied by a handout is better than without the handout in class VIII SMPN 3 Solok. The population in this study is a class VIII student enrolled in the academic year 2016/2017. The sampling technique is cluster random sampling. VIII7 class that was selected as an experimental class and VIII5 as the control class. The instrument used in this study was a test in the form of essays. Data were analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test and t-test. Based on data analysis, the hypothesis H1 is accepted. It is concluded that students' understanding of mathematics concepts with the application of active learning model giving the type of question and getting answers accompanied by a handout is better than without handouts in class VIII SMPN 3 Solok.
